BIIAB Scotland Supports Licensed Retail Industry With New Staff Qualification

30-Jul-2008

BIIAB Scotland is pleased to announce the launch of the new Scottish Certificate for Licensed Premises Staff (SCLPS). The BIIAB qualification has been developed by the licensed retail sector’s professional body to give the industry a head start in meeting the requirements of the new licensing regime.

From September 2009 all staff must be trained in key areas of licensing law and social responsibility before they can sell alcohol. BIIAB initiated discussions with the Scottish Government in order to find the best way to meet the training requirements set out in the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005. Several months of discussions and development work have resulted in the creation of the BIIAB SCLPS, which is fully accredited by the Scottish Qualification Authority (Regulatory) (SQA).

The content of the BIIAB SCLPS covers all 16 key areas identified by the Scottish Government, as well as others identified by the industry and its regulators. The training is supported by an easy to follow interactive workbook, which includes activities, quizzes and sample exam questions. The course can be completed in two hours, although longer tuition and self-study options are also available.

The subject areas sit under five main headings:

On completion of the training, a short exam consisting of 25 multiple-choice questions can be taken on the same day. With successful achievement of the pass mark (17 out of 25), candidates are awarded a nationally-recognised certificate which is transferable within the industry.

As with all BIIAB qualifications, the training is delivered through a network of approved training centres, of which there are more than 90 across Scotland. Glasgow based bar, restaurant and hotel group G1 Group Plc is the first organisation to put a team of 40 delegates through the new qualification. The delegates are the staff team based at G1’s newly opened bar Committee Room 9 in John Street, Glasgow.

Alan Jones, head of training at G1 Group, who also trains staff in other BIIAB qualifications (namely the Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (SCPLH) and the National Certificate for Door Supervisors (Scotland)), commented: “The BIIAB SCLPS certificate will show evidence of due diligence in terms of basic training and provides a record of staff training that premises managers are required to keep under the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005. This qualification will help our staff to progress within the licensed retail sector and many may go on to take the BIIAB SCPLH.”

“The results of all BIIAB qualifications are provided to me within 24 hours and I then receive the certificates within ten days of the course ending, which means that candidates are not kept waiting and applications for licences are not held up.”

The SCLPS forms part of the BIIAB Professional Barpersons Qualification, which includes the Award in Customer and Drinks Service, and can provide the next step in career development for committed bar staff.

Training costs vary according to each individual training centre. For more information or to find your nearest centre, call the Quality Assurance department on 01276 684449 or visit www.biiab.org . For more information on the BIIAB SCLPS, click here.
