Back By Popular Demand: BII Rent Review Roadshows Give Must-Have Advice
06-Aug-2008
Pub tenants and lessees involved in negotiating rent reviews with their pub companies will greatly benefit from attending a series of roadshows being organised around the country this autumn by BII, the professional body for the licensed retail sector.
The roadshows are being run in association with the Morning Advertiser and editor Andrew Pring will be chairing each event. The aim of the events is to give BII members and non-members an in depth understanding of:
-
how rents are calculated
-
how to prepare for rent reviews
-
how to operate as professionally as possible to ensure a fair review is achieved.
-
how rents are resolved when parties fail to agree
Anyone connected with the subject area can benefit from attending. The format of the roadshow events allows for breakout sessions where licensees will be given an in-depth analysis of how to prepare and conduct themselves through the process, led by Phil Dixon CMBII. Meanwhile, other attendees may participate in a discussion on landlord and tenant relations in view of the MP’s ongoing Business Enterprise Committee investigation. The seminars will feature two of the country’s leading experts in this area – chartered surveyors Barry Gillham FRICS from Fleurets and Roger Vickers FRICS from Brownill Bateman.
Steve Howe, BII director of membership, commented: “Just the very thought of a rent review can incite fear in a licensee. If you’re not properly prepared, they can be a very stressful experience. We aim to dispel some of the myths surrounding rent reviews, encourage positive communication between licensees and pubcos and assist the process to be as straightforward as possible.”
The roadshows are being sponsored by Punch Taverns, Enterprise Inns, Scottish & Newcastle Pub Enterprises and Admiral Taverns which will each present sessions on their approach to reviews. Five events are being held in locations throughout England and Wales:
-
Duxford, Cambridgeshire – 16th September (FREE qualification offer* – see below)
-
Chepstow, Monmouthshire – 17th September
-
Leeds – 30th September
-
Bolton, Lancashire – 1st October
-
Gillingham, Kent – 7th October
*The first 100 paying attendees to book for the Duxford event will receive a voucher for two sets of BIIAB Level 1 Award in Responsible Alcohol Retailing (ARAR) handbooks and telephone examinations. The ARAR qualification is designed to provide essential knowledge and understanding of the responsibilities of retailers authorised to sell alcohol. Successful completion will clearly indicate that candidates and DPSs alike are demonstrating commitment to responsible alcohol retailing.
Tickets for each event cost just £25 for BII members and £30 for non-members. For more information or to book a place, contact Belinda Norris on 01276 417825, email belindan@bii.org or visit www.bii.org/events
