Do you know someone who is worthy of the title “BII 2009 Licensee of the Year”?
BII, the professional body for the licensed retail industry, is inviting entries for this hotly contested competition from licensees of pubs, bars, clubs, restaurants and hotels up and down the country.
The BII Licensee of the Year award is all about people and the way they run their business. Judges are looking for individuals or partnerships who make the best of the resources they have available. They could be running a community boozer, a village local or a high street bar. The type of venue isn’t important; what is important is that entrants:
-
show great business ability
-
are committed to improving themselves and their staff
-
are passionate about the business and can speak knowledgeably about industry affairs
-
would be a great ambassador for professionalism in licensed retail
Being crowned BII Licensee of the Year is probably the most prestigious accolade available in the licensed trade. The winner enjoys national “celebrity” status for the year of their reign and benefits from extensive publicity in the local, national and trade media. The prize also includes £1,000 prize money to donate to their chosen charity and a case of wine to auction for charity, courtesy of award sponsor Matthew Clark.
Entering is fun and simple – the first stage is answering a series of true or false questions, and this provides a great opportunity for all staff to get involved in completing the questionnaire. Shortlisted entrants are invited to answer three further questions about their business and management style and then whittled down again to 18 semi-finalists. These 18 are each visited at their outlet and interviewed by two independent judges, and six finalists are then selected to present to a panel of judges in February 2009.
The BII Licensee of the Year award is run in conjunction with The Publican magazine and the winner will remain a closely guarded secret until the night of the glittering Publican awards – the industry ‘Oscars’ – in central London on 24th March 2009.
Entry to the award is open to all UK on trade licensees whether they are freeholders, tenants/lessees or managers. Entrants do not have to be a member of BII.
Chris Lewis FBII, 2008 BII Licensee of the Year, of The Swan in Stafford, had this to say about winning: “I have had in excess of £10,000 worth of press exposure, met some very interesting people and got some great business ideas from other operators.”
